FC Porto's Galo Santos has been named the new manager after the club's board announced that they will appoint former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Thiago Alcântara as their new head coach.

The move comes just days before the start of the 2021-22 season, which is set to be the most important for FC Porto since they were relegated from the Primeira Liga in 2017.

Alcântara, who previously managed French side Rennes and also spent time with PSG, was appointed as the new manager on Monday, with his appointment being confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPA).

In his first press conference following the announcement, Alcântara said: "I am very excited to take over this club and bring my experience and skills to help us achieve our goals."

He went on to praise the team's squad, stating: "We have a talented group of players who have shown great promise throughout the season so far and I believe we can continue to improve and progress towards achieving success."

However, Alcântara did not forget about the challenges facing the club going into the upcoming season, saying: "It's always difficult to start a new season with a new manager, but I'm confident in my ability to lead our team and make sure we get the best out of each other."
